Welcome 2021 - 17th Annual - ‘The Maine Bull Sale’
SALE ORDER FINAL!
This year marks our 17th Annual 'The Maine Bull Sale' on TEAM. The family has been selling Maine Bulls for 49+ Years. A lot of things have changed since the beginning - but with saying that a lot of things have stayed the same!
We are continuing to see a lot of change to our operation. Last May 175 pairs were shipped to Sask & spent the summer & fall at the Ranch in Saskatchewan. This year will see over 200 pairs Head out in May and come back to Alberta in the fall.
Last year we hoped that Jayse and Kadin’s venture into the outfitting business of waterfowl (ducks/geese/cranes) hunts encompassing millions of acres in SE Sask would’ve happened. But Covid shut down any travel for hunters from South of the 49th. Let’s hope this fall it will happen - for more info go to

The past few years have been profitable times for the cow/calf producer - but it’s been a challenge for our friends and neighbors in the feedlot sector. The demand from global consumers for beef produced here in North America continues to flourish even with the Covid pandemic. Premiums are being paid for quality genetics and for good reason - both packers and feeders are realizing the advantages that genetics from top end producers are worth and they are paying larger premiums compared to the averages that the industry was accustomed to pay.
Both technology and data collection in today's industry is enabling buyers to follow and track producers calves and in the end I believe it’s benefiting our customers with their Maine Anjou and Mainetainer calves at marketing time.
We take data serious and that’s why the majority of the bulls have had the following -
DNA Igenity Profiles
DNA tested
- TH & PHA free
Additionally there is Ultrasound scanned data on all bulls.
The docility and maternal strengths that the Breed have always been know for continue to be the mainstay in our herd. Additionally, there is the breed characteristics that help improve lean meat yield, feed efficiency/conversions, quality grade and marbling. A lot of people think Maines are a showring breed but to our customers they usually show their calves just once a year! That is the time when you sell them - if it's in the fall as a bawling calf or in the spring backgrounded or maybe out of the feedlot to the packer. We realize why there is a difference in value for cattle and we try to breed our herd to help our customers realize the genetic advantage in using our bulls.
Starting in 1972 Dad (Bill) has marketed our program worldwide but I think the best job he’s done in promoting the benefit of Maine Anjou genetics is right here in Western Canada. Over the years our customers calves have sold for premiums. Last fall we saw our bull customers 6 wt calves bring $5 + premiums ($30+ hd) over other high selling calves. Just last month we had a customers calves bring $3-4 hundred on 750-800 wt strs ($25-30 head) - in addition to those premiums on feeders we had some some Fed heifers bring $85 per hd premiums on the Grid - fetching the premiums by maxing out the CAB premiums set forth by the packer.
We’ve had good times in the cattle business over the past few years - but we must remember one thing to stay in the business we still need a momma cow! That cow better be fertile, maternal and easy to handle when needed. That is why we believe in the Maine Anjou and Mainetainer influence in the cowherd and why we are so eager for our bull offering to get to work out in your fields.
This years offering continues to be managed and grown out as the majority of our customers do with their calves. We utilize no creep on our calves and the cows live on a diet of hay or graze on forage with no silage or grain supplemented to their diet. Keep in mind our herd health is equally important and we work diligently with Cow Calf Health - VBP+ to insure our animals are managed and care for with traceability. Also our program is verified Zoetis SelectVac Gold.
The bull calves were weaned in Mid Sept and hauled 840 km to our home place at Strathmore. Then they were weaned & fed for 6 weeks on tame hay pasture and received 6 lbs of a rolled growing ration before being moved to Schunicht Farms the end of October - where they are programmed on a growing silage & chopped hay ration that is limit fed!
We feed so the bulls have an opportunity to prove performance, but by no means are they pushed on a high energy ration and fattened. We believe that longevity is not only genetic but proper management can help that process as well. Our cowherd continues to be fed and managed like a lot of our commercial client’s cowherds which enables you all the opportunity to compare our genetics on a truthful straight forward program.
We look forward to March 24th and hope that you will be able to stop by and inspect the bulls for yourselves. We sorted thru over 80 bull calves to get to this set of 46. This years offering is our most uniform and best set ever and as you go thru the offering you will notice the sire groups offer numerous 3/4 brothers to help enable you a chance to put together bulls that will sire a uniform set of calves. Please feel free to call and discuss if you have any questions on the offering.
All bulls will be Semen tested March 27th - as always all the scrotals are actual to Feb 20- in the past we have seen these bulls change from 1-4 cm when we semen test as they bulls are just reaching puberty and will be approx 13 months of age at test time. We stand behind these bulls 100% on their breeding soundness.
Thanks for the interest and help yourselves to the bulls,
The Wilson Families
